Finding A Digital Camera Online
Michalis 'BIG Mike' Kotzakolios

Nowadays shopping can be done at the leisure of your office chair and computer terminal via online purchasing. It’s as simple as knowing what you want and placing an order with your credit card or online banking system. If you’re one of millions of people who are considering purchasing a digital camera, it’s easier than ever to buy a digital camera online.

There are concerns, of course. One great worry for people buying an expensive electronic device like a digital camera online is that they may be cheated. Yet, if you think about it, can’t this happen at a regular store, likewise? As well, this is not to say that the average company making sales over the internet is without scruples, they want to make not only sales, but build repeat customers, which means providing satisfaction in addition to a decent product. It is the purpose of this brief article to convince you of the relative safety of purchasing a digital camera online as well as to provide a few other useful tips.

First, before you even have time to worry about the ethics of companies that may be based 3,000 miles away, consider what digital camera online purchase you have in mind. Specifically, why do you want such a camera, and for what exact reason? Are you an environmentalist aware that by not requiring film, these new electronic cameras, have helped to reduce water pollution because the need to use photo processing chemicals are passé with such new gadgets? Or are you a photo enthusiast who wants to move on to the new technology, or even onto your third or fourth such camera?

Most people are probably somewhere in-between these two extremes. First you should know that while buying a digital camera online will get you a piece of one of the hottest selling technologies around, and yes, it will certainly aid our struggling eco-system, you won’t have quite the same quality that is to be found in a traditional film-loaded camera. Many professional photographers, purists particularly, won’t even consider acquiring a digital camera online, in a store, or from any source. This attitude, however, is changing with each successive year as better quality cameras appear on the market.

The basic consideration of what you’re going to use your camera for is substantial as it should determine just how much you should spend on such a device (even if you’re a millionaire). If you’re going to just take shots of the family at holidays, well, go low. If, however, you’re trying to break into photojournalism, a few dollars more may take you a long way.

With that in mind, look into pixilation and storage capacity, as these two factors are paramount to the cost that you’ll pay for a digital camera online. Pixilation means how many pixels, or tiny points of light that can be captured on a given amount of space on your photo, say, per square millimeter. The higher the pixilation, the higher the resolution –that is, the clarity and detail.

Storage capacity is merely indicative of how many pictures can be stored in your camera (you can also purchase additional storage space in the form of a flash card, which is like a tiny storage unit for your camera). It used to be that the early digital cameras could hold only about 30 pictures, though now very affordable cameras can hold hundreds of photos. Deciding on these two aspects and their level of importance to you should be of major consideration. Once that’s resolved, you’re ready to buy.
